New Jersey Supreme Court Orders State Legislature To Either
Permit Same-Sex Marriage or Civil Unions
Wednesday, the New Jersey
State Supreme Court ordered their state legislature to legalize same-sex
unions. The court gave the legislature six months to either amend the
state's marriage statutes to include gay people, or write a new law in which
same-sex couples "would enjoy the rights of civil marriage."
In its opinion, the court
indicates that a confrontation with the church is near. "However the Legislature may
act," the majority writes, "same-sex couples will be free to call
their relationships by the name they choose and sanctify their relationships in
religious ceremonies in houses of worship."
Wake-up Call
This ruling should serve as
a wake-up call for those who believe we don’t need a constitutional amendment
in Minnesota. In Minnesota, a group of
state senators, lead by Senate Majority Leader Dean Johnson, have repeatedly
blocked attempts to allow voters to decide whether marriage should be
permanently protected as the union of one man and one woman. This leaves Minnesota judges free to
overturn our state marriage laws.
