MINNEAPOLIS – Tom Prichard, President of the Minnesota Family Council, today announced a statewide radio ad campaign in Greater Minnesota senate districts of the following ten senators:
Bakk, Dean Johnson, Kubly, Langseth, Sams, Saxhaug, Skoe, Sparks, Stumpf, and Vickerman Hundreds of radio spots will run over the next ten days in state senate districts of senators who voted against bringing the Defense of Marriage Amendment to the Senate floor for a vote. “Our message is that the Defense of Marriage Amendment is the only amendment which clearly gives explicit constitutional protections to the definition of marriage in Minnesota,” said Prichard. “It would take the issue out of the hands of judges and politicians. Marriage is too important not to let the people vote on a constitutional amendment.” Senator Don Betzold recently offered his own bill on defining marriage. “We strongly oppose Senator Betzold’s amendment,” added Prichard. “It still allows gay marriage in Minnesota without a vote of the people.” “Unfortunately, the DFL leadership in the Senate is making this a partisan issue,” stated Prichard. DFL state Senator Scott Dibble from Minneapolis articulated this recently saying, “The DFL Caucus understands that to contemplate this initiative going on the ballot is bad for Democrats no matter what they believe or what they believe their district would support…” (GLBT Press, Feb. 26, 2004). “Political posturing should have no place in efforts to protect marriage, which is so fundamental to the well being of society. Unfortunately, activist judges in Massachusetts and local officials issuing homosexual marriage licenses across the nation show how the will of people is being ignored in various parts of the country. To protect marriage from activist Minnesota judges and backroom political deals, Minnesota needs to pass the Defense of Marriage Amendment,” concluded Prichard.
