Minnesota for Marriage released a statewide poll today showing substantial support for passage of state marriage amendment.
“The results of the statewide poll on the Minnesota marriage amendment is clear and unequivocal – Minnesotans by substantial majorities don’t support legalizing same sex marriage in Minnesota; believe the people of Minnesota should be allowed to vote on a marriage amendment; and would support the marriage amendment themselves,” said Tom Prichard, President of the Minnesota Family Council, a member of the Minnesota for Marriage coalition. “In addition, nearly 49% of Minnesotans say opposition by their state senator to allowing the people to vote on the amendment would make them less likely to vote to re-elect their senator. This compares with only 10% who would be more likely to vote for them. This nearly 5 to 1 margin in favor of allowing the people to vote on the marriage amendment sends a strong message on the importance of the marriage amendment to a significant number of Minnesotans.” “It’s interesting comparing the Mason-Dixon poll commissioned by MPR and Pioneer Press in February 2004 to February 2005. Opposition to legalizing same sex marriage has increased from 63% to 65% while support for legalizing same sex marriage has dropped from 27% to 21%. At the same time, support for a marriage amendment has increased from 43% to 61% and opposition has dropped from 49% to 29%. The more people learn about efforts to protect marriage, the more they support passage of a constitutional amendment.” In addition to the polling data, Minnesota for Marriage, a broad coalition of individuals and organizations dedicated to passing the marriage amendment this legislative session, announced (Over) plans to share similar polling results in key senatorial districts. “Support for the marriage amendment, and the desire to vote on the amendment is even stronger outside the metro area,” said Gary Borgendale, Alliance Coordinator for Minnesota for Marriage. Borgendale stressed the diverse cross-section of coalition members including African American, Hmong, Jewish, Catholic, Islam, Coptic and Protestant denominations. “The polls show that the marriage amendment brings people together.” Communications Director Chuck Darrell announced plans to reveal local district poll numbers in Grand Rapids Friday, March 18th.. “We encourage Senator Saxhaug and Representatives Anderson and Solberg to join us in support for the marriage amendment.” “Clearly, the coalition and poll numbers demonstrate the broad base of support for the marriage amendment,” says Darrell. “Minnesotans stand together because children need a mother and a father in the home. Current state and federal statutes have proven unreliable as a safeguard against activist judges or back-room deals at the state legislature. Therefore, the people of Minnesota are saying, ‘Let the people vote.’” Darrell urges voters to contact their state senator and tell them to support the marriage amendment. |
