Family Group Calls on KARE-11 to act responsibly and drop deeply offensive TV show, The Book of Daniel

MINNEAPOLIS Tom Prichard, president of the Minnesota Family Council (MFC), today called on KARE-11 executives to drop the new NBC TV series The Book of Daniel because it trashes the deeply held religious beliefs of hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans.

The program makes a mockery of the deeply held religious beliefs of thousands of Minnesotans by stereotyping religious folks in general as immoral hypocrites. It makes the Bundys of Married with Children look like the Cleavers on Leave it to Beaver in comparison to Daniel Websters family, said Prichard.

The show portrays an Episcopal priest, Daniel Webster, as addicted to drugs and married to a woman who needs her mid-day martini. He also has a 23-year-old son who is a gay Republican, 16-year-old daughter who deals drugs, and a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishops daughter. The church secretary is a lesbian who is sleeping with Websters sister-in-law. His brother-in-law is stealing money from the church, and his churchs female bishop is having an affair with his father. According to Religion News Service, the series is written by Jack Kenny who is openly gay, describes himself as being in Catholic recovery, is interested in reincarnation and unsure how he defines God and/or Jesus.

Without a doubt religious folks are not perfect. But the show stereotypes religious folks in general as immoral hypocrites. If KARE-11 has any sense of propriety and decency it will immediately cancel the show. If the station wants to be a family friendly voice in the community it will follow the example of other NBC affiliates across the country and drop this series, added Prichard.

To not cancel this show sends the message loud and clear, KARE-11 is willing to make money off of programs which attack the deeply held beliefs of hundreds of thousands of Minnesotans and portray religious families has dysfunctional hypocrites, concluded Prichard
