Minneapolis – Tom Prichard, President of the Minnesota Family Council (MFC), today, said the pro-family cause came out of the recent legislative session with a number of successes, especially remarkable given the defeat of a number of pro-family legislators in 2006 elections.
“I think the pro-family cause did very well during the recently concluded legislative session, all things considered. Taxes weren’t raised on Minnesota families; the door wasn’t opened for legalizing smoked marijuana; efforts to grant marriage-type status to homosexual partners were rejected; comprehensive, contraceptive sex ed wasn’t mandated on all Minnesota middle and high schools; and taxpayer funding of embryonic stem cell was turned back,” said Prichard. “I really applaud Governor Pawlenty and pro-family senators and representatives for hanging tough and not backing down in the defense of the family values embraced by a majority of Minnesotans. I was also impressed by the aggressiveness of pro-family legislators in their outspoken defense of the pro-family, pro-life cause,” added Prichard. “The first of January things looked a lot different,” continued Prichard. “I’m very pleased with the way things turned out. I think the legislative session was a good opportunity to debate where Minnesota wants to move as a state. One road leads to more intrusive, costly government programs, higher taxes, and radical redefinition of the family. The other road leads to limited, family-friendly government, respect for rights of parents, concern for the most vulnerable among us, and protecting families. If we want what’s best for children and families, I believe we’ll take the latter road.” “This session served as an excellent starting point for beginning this broader public policy debate. We have dozens of votes on critical family issues which we’ll be publicizing and encouraging debate on in legislative districts across Minnesota in the coming months,” concluded Prichard. |
