Governor Ventura’s Issuance of 'Christian Heritage Week' Program Applauded

MINNEAPOLIS – Governor Ventura’s office inadvertently issued a proclamation declaring the week of October 13 through October 19, 2002 “Christian Heritage Week.” Tom Prichard, President of the Minnesota Family Council, applauded the issuance of the proclamation.

“After all the disparaging remarks he’s made about religion and his rebuff of the National Day of Prayer throughout his tenure as governor, it’s both providential and poetic justice that his office would issue a ‘Christian Heritage Week’ Proclamation,” said Prichard.

The Proclamation included, among other things, the following quotes:

* The Preamble of the Minnesota Constitution which states that “We the people of the State Minnesota, grateful to God for our civil and religious liberty and desiring perpetuate its blessings and secure that same to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution.”

* Thomas Jefferson, author of the Declaration of Independence who said: “Can the liberties of a nation be secure when we have removed the conviction that these liberties are the gift of God.”

* Patrick Henry who recited Proverbs 14:34 for our nation, “Righteousness alone can exalt a nation, but sin is a disgrace to any people.”

* And Benjamin Franklin’s statement at the Constitutional Convention of 1787, “It is impossible to build an empire without our Father’s aid. I believe the sacred writings which say that “except the Lord build the House, they labor in vain that build it.”

“The Proclamation simply quotes from many of our founding fathers who recognized the vital important part religion plays in our nation’s heritage. We had hoped the governor would have followed the example of the President and the rest of the governors across America and issued a ‘National Day of Prayer’ Proclamation earlier this year. But with Governor Ventura and the commendation of our nation and state’s religious heritage, you take them any way you can get them,” concluded Prichard.
