Just Concluded 2003 Legislative Session Saw Biggest Pro-Family Gains in Recent Memory

MINNEAPOLIS – Tom Prichard, president of the Minnesota Family Council, today said that the just ended state legislative session contained significant pro-family legislative gains.

“We’re delighted with the outcome of the recent legislative session and thank the governor and legislators in the House and Senate for their support and passage of a number of significant pro-family initiatives,” said Prichard.

This year the Minnesota Family Council listed among its legislative priorities the elimination of the Profile of Learning, passage of the Woman’s Right to Know legislation, dropping of domestic partner benefits and no tax increases.

“To come out of a legislative session with these changes was a major success,” said Prichard. “This was a watershed session which we only plan to build upon.”

“I certainly didn’t expect to see everything we advocated for put into state law, however the initiatives which did pass were very significant,” said Prichard.

Other MFC legislative initiatives such as providing an abstinence until marriage curriculum option for students, parental consent for their minor children’s medical treatment and Internet filters for public libraries and schools will likely be pursued in the 2004 session. The Family Council will also be communicating with the Pawlenty Administration this summer on a wide range of issues from health care to strengthening parental involvement in education.
