Today, Minnesota Family Council announces the launch of their latest initiative, a campaign to end Ageism in all its forms! The launch of the campaign comes as part of a national movement to end Ageism. Ageism is the creation of social distinctions based upon a person’s age in birth years, and it can manifest itself in various forms, including but not limited to:
- Senior citizens’ discounts;
- Special children’s pricing (e.g., airlines rates for lap children);
- Prohibitions in law based on age (e.g., age limitations on drinking and driving, forming contracts).
Activists behind the movement to end Ageism affirm that a person’s age should be determined by how people identify themselves based upon a deeply held internal sense of self, rather than by the traditional, more constrictive method of merely using one’s age in birth years, to determine their actual age.
Thus, senior citizens' discounts and special children's pricing, and other deals granted to persons based upon their birth age, are discriminatory against persons who may self-identify as older or younger than their actual birth age.
John Helmberger, MFC's CEO said this about the campaign to end Ageism: "I have a dear friend who sincerely believes he's an 'old soul.' He has identified as an older man since he was quite young. There's no reason he should not be allowed to access senior citizens' discount pricing and Medicare now since he self-identifies over age 65, though his age in birth years is 38."
MFC's campaign to end Ageism will include a lobbying effort to permit citizens who self-identify as a different age from their birth-year age to change the birth year on their birth certificates so it more closely matches their identity.
...Of course the above "News Alert" is not true. Although, I'm sure many of you out there wish we could identify our age based on how we perceive ourselves! If that were the case, we'd likely find many teenagers suddenly aging, and many folks 30 and older suddenly back in their twenties!
But, our fake news release speaks to a more serious problem.
The latest push by activists in the LGBTQ movement is for persons who self-identify as a gender different from their biological sex to be able to access facilities like bathrooms, locker rooms, showers, etc. designated for the opposite biological sex. These activists view "sex-segregated" bathrooms as discriminatory against a person who self-identifies opposite his or her biological sex.
And, in case you were wondering, our legal system has already made it possible to change your birth sex on your birth certificatefairly easily.
Like our fake news alert, the push for "gender identity rights" begs a deeper question:
With the loss of a recognition of moral truth in culture, are we also losing the recognition of physical realities? Thus, is everything now relative, with no moral or biological absolutes?
In other words, if one's gender is based on self-identity rather than biological reality, what about all the other innate characteristics one can't help being born with, like the year and day you were born (making you a certain age over time in birth years), like your race, like your nationality. Could we not base those other characteristics on "self-identification" too if everything is relative?
This doesn't seem like a safe or healthy public policy to us.
Consider this recent piece from Public Discourse.
The author makes clear: "No amount of surgical mutilation of body parts, effeminate behaviors, or artificial female appearances can make a man a woman."
The author also analogizes to nationality...
"Consider the following analogies. Suppose that a Caucasian man from Finland—call him Gunther—suddenly decided that he identifies as being of Sub-Saharan African descent. Suppose further that, in light of this, Gunther undergoes unusual procedures to have his skin darkened and his skull’s bone structure re-shaped so as to resemble that of individuals of Sub-Saharan descent. Would we think that such a person has suddenly become of Sub-Saharan descent through such procedures?"
...and to Age:
"Similarly, suppose that a seventy-year-old man—call him Bob—comes to identify as a sixteen-year-old. Wouldn’t we think it absurd if people considered it “rude” or “bigoted” to tell the man: “You are not sixteen years old. Your identifying as such doesn’t change this fact, and we will not indulge you in your strange delusions by not calling attention to your old age and by pretending that you really are sixteen years old”?"
WHAT'S THE BOTTOM LINE?
How Christians respond to this latest push from LGBTQ activists has profound social, legal, physical, and - most importantly - spiritual consequences.
The lie that a boy can be a girl or a girl can be a boy is, as the author in the piece above notes, "literally leaving casualties in its wake."
Read our compilation of heartbreaking stories from individuals whose lives have been deeply hurt by the lie of transgenderism HERE.
What will be the consequences for deeply hurting children who are told that they should live out this lie--ultimately chemically altering their bodies with hormones (of which we don't know all the long-term effects; the effects we DO know include infertility) or even undergoing genital mutilation to help them embrace the "gender identity" adults are telling them they have?
How many gender-confused teens and young adults will end their lives because they can't find true meaning in the lives society has told them to live?
How many children's other issues will be overlooked or undiagnosedfor the sake of affirming a "gender identity"?
And, last but certainly not least, if we as a culture reject the basic physical condition of being made in the Creator God's own image as male or female (“God created mankind in His own image…male and female He created them.” Genesis 1:27), then we reject God Himself ("For ever since the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky. Through everything God made, they can clearly see his invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse for not knowing God." Romans 1:20).
How can believers spread the Good News about Jesus' love, grace, mercy, and forgiveness to a world that rejects even the most basic physical manifestation of His handiwork?
Thus, our ability to spread the Gospel itself (as we are called to do) is at stake with the rejection of physical reality in favor of "gender identity."
Our NEWS ALERT above was written in jest, but what's at stake here is no joke.
