Minnesota's 2025 Legislative Session

The deadline for Minnesota's legislative session arrived on Monday, May 19, with much budget work remaining for the Minnesota legislature. Legislators have spent this week negotiating policy and budget priorities after receiving the joint budget agreement from leaders of the House of Representatives, the State Senate, and the Governor's office last Thursday, May 15.

A special session will be called by Governor Walz, as early as the Tuesday or Wednesday of next week, and legislators will vote omnibus policy packages into state law. Legislators are looking to finish up legislative work before June 1, when layoff notices in state agencies would be sent. If the legislature is unable to agree to budget proposals, the government would go into a shutdown effective July 1.

We plan to send you a full legislative update once the legislature completes its work as we track many public policy provisions of the omnibus bills. A couple remaining issues which we are monitoring in omnibus bills are the following:

  • Preserving funding for Nonpublic Students

  • Passing a small expansion to the Child Tax Credit, granting tax relief for qualifying families when the family has had a baby within the taxable year

  • Stopping the legalization of Mobile Sports Gambling

You can track issues we are working on at our Bill Tracker.

U.S. House of Representatives Votes to Defund Planned Parenthood

This week, the U.S. House of Representatives, led by Speaker Mike Johnson, passed budget legislation which would defund Planned Parenthood from taxpayer dollars. Planned Parenthood conducts hundreds of thousands of abortions each year and promotes so-called "gender affirming care," potentially sterilizing drugs, to children.

No taxpayer dollars should go to this industry which profits from the murder and medicalization, potentially sterilization, of children. We applaud the U.S. House of Representatives for seeking to stop taxpayer dollars from funding this industry.

Contact Minnesota's U.S. Senators, asking them to vote to defund Planned Parenthood:
