Recent polling data reveals that the radical abortion agenda being embraced by the political left is not even popular with their own base. In a nationwide survey, the pro-life group Susan B. Anthony List found that “53% of likely voters are more likely to vote for a Republican candidate who supports a 15-week limit on abortion versus just 28% of voters who prefer a Democratic candidate who supports unlimited abortion up until the moment of birth. Independent voters break strongly to the GOP side by a 54% to 18% margin.”

This is especially relevant as the Supreme Court considers Dobbs v. Jackson Women’s Health Organization, a case challenging Mississippi’s ban on abortions after 15 weeks. The Court has agreed to rule on the central question of “Whether all pre-viability prohibitions on elective abortions are unconstitutional.” This case could significantly undermine Roe v. Wade and play an essential role in ending abortion.

As SBA List’s poll shows, the majority of Americans want to see restrictions on abortion that go beyond what Roe allows. Many abortion polls simply ask Americans if they support Roe without giving necessary background information about what Roe does. This skews the response in favor of the abortion movement. The reality is that the majority of Americans support at least some protections for preborn babies and would vote for candidates who support those protections.

The poll also found that people were more likely to support a 15-week ban on abortion once they learned that a baby is capable of experiencing pain at 15 weeks. Recent research indicates that preborn babies are actually capable of experiencing pain as early as 8 weeks and that a preborn baby whose nervous system is not fully developed experiences pain far more, not less, than they would at a later stage of development or as a mature adult. Furthermore, science has confirmed again and again what the abortion lobby is unwilling to admit — preborn babies are without question alive and human. Abortion robs an innocent human being of life, and it does so in a truly barbaric manner.

As one of only seven countries to allow abortion on demand after 20-weeks, the U.S. already has some of the most radical abortion laws in the world, and yet, the abortion lobby is pushing for an even more radical abortion agenda. Although many Americans say they support Roe, they often support restrictions that are incompatible with Roe, including bans on abortions after 15 weeks. The abortion agenda is barbaric and it’s time for politicians to stop demanding radical abortion laws that have very little support from the American public and more importantly, it’s time for our laws to respect the right to life.
